Congratulations to Dr. Shyam Visweswaran who was recently appointed as an ISP faculty member! Dr. Visweswaran is a recent ISP PhD student who has joined the Department of Biomedical Informatics as an Assistant Professor.

About the ISP

The Graduate Program in Intelligent Systems serves as a center at the University of Pittsburgh for advanced education and research in artificial intelligence and some related areas of cognitive science. Drawing on strengths from many sectors of the university, and on over thirty funded research projects, the program offers a strong, well balanced core curriculum in the fundamentals of AI and many opportunities for advanced research and training.

The ISP and Other Departments

The scope of the program is broad, but offers concentration in specific areas such as: diagnosis, knowledge representation, machine learning, intelligent tutoring, natural language generation and discourse, planning, case based reasoning, and problem solving. There are especially strong connections to research groups in the Department of Computer Science, the Learning Research and Development Center, and the School of Medicine. The program also draws on associated faculty from other units, including: the Graduate School of Business, the Interdisciplinary Department of Information Science, the School of Law, the Department of Linguistics, the Department of Philosophy, and the Department of Psychology.
